Deakin University Ranking & Admissions Guide for Sri Lankan Students
Considering Deakin for your studies in Australia? This guide covers the latest rankings, what you need to get in, and what Sri Lankan students should know before applying.
Where Does Deakin University Rank Globally?
Deakin is ranked #207 worldwide in the QS World University Rankings 2026 and sits at #11 in Australia according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. It holds the #1 spot in Australia for international student happiness and satisfaction, according to the International Student Barometer 2025.
For Sri Lankan students, these numbers matter. A top-200 globally ranked institution carries real weight on your CV and strengthens your post-study visa and PR applications. Deakin sits firmly in the top 1% of universities worldwide.
Subject Rankings: Where Deakin Stands Out
Deakin consistently performs well in specific disciplines that attract Sri Lankan students. Nursing ranks in the top 51–100 globally in QS subject rankings, while Psychology improved significantly to the 101–150 band in 2025. Computer Science is ranked #179 globally by QS, and Engineering programs sit in the 126–150 band according to Times Higher Education.
Business, Law, Health Sciences, and Data Analytics are also popular choices for international students. Deakin ranks #112 in the world for sustainability, a growing consideration for students in fields like environmental science and engineering.
Campuses and Study Locations
Deakin’s main campuses are located in Melbourne’s Burwood suburb, Geelong Waurn Ponds, Geelong Waterfront, and Warrnambool, along with an online cloud campus. Melbourne is consistently ranked among the world’s top student cities. QS ranks Melbourne #5 best student cities in the world in 2026.
For Sri Lankan students choosing between campuses, Burwood Melbourne offers the most course variety and the strongest industry connections. Geelong campuses are well-suited for nursing, engineering, and health science programs, and regional study there can add extra years to your post-study work visa.
Deakin University Acceptance Rate and Intakes
Deakin’s acceptance rate sits at approximately 75%, making it moderately accessible compared to the more selective Go8 universities. This doesn’t mean standards are low — it means a well-prepared application from a Sri Lankan student with solid A/Level or degree results has a genuine shot.
Deakin follows a trimester system with three intakes: Trimester 1 (March), Trimester 2 (July), and Trimester 3 (November). Trimester 1 is the primary intake with the widest range of course availability. Most Sri Lankan students target the March or July intake, so apply at least three to four months ahead to allow time for offer processing and visa applications.
Academic Entry Requirements for International Students
Entry requirements vary by program level and course. For undergraduate programs, most courses require a minimum score of 65% in Year 12 equivalent qualifications. Law programs have a higher threshold of 80%.
For postgraduate coursework, you must have completed at least a three-year undergraduate degree from an approved institution. Sri Lankan students with a local university degree, HND, or equivalent professional qualification are generally eligible for postgraduate entry, though some competitive programs may require relevant work experience or a higher GPA.
English Language Requirements
The minimum IELTS score for undergraduate entry is 6.0, while postgraduate coursework programs require IELTS 6.5, with no individual band below 6.0. Some courses; particularly nursing, teaching, and law have higher requirements, so check your specific program page before applying.
PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT are also accepted. If you don’t yet meet the English requirement, Deakin’s pathway programs, including on-campus English courses through DUELI, can help you meet entry requirements and prepare for your degree. This is a practical route for Sri Lankan students who are strong academically but need to improve their English test scores.
Documents Required to Apply
You will need certified copies of your academic transcripts and award certificates, proof of identity such as your passport, and proof of English proficiency through your IELTS or equivalent test results. Some programs also require a personal statement or statement of purpose.
Translate and certify any documents not in English before submission. The application fee for international students is AUD 55, which is non-refundable. Applications are submitted online through Deakin’s international student portal or through a registered education agent.
